Dear parents,
HAPPY EARTH DAY EVERYONE!!!! The students and I had lots of fun celebrating today. Ask them to tell you about a story we read called, Dear Children of the Earth.
All the students should have brought home their Winnie the Pooh costumes today. Please make sure they wear them to school on Monday. Inside the costume bag should be a change of clothes (for when we get back from Glendridge), A LUNCH BOX (we will be eating at Glendridge), and any costume accessories. PLEASE MAKE SURE THE COSTUMES HAVE A BELT. I believe the only characters that don’t need a belt are the narrators and the bees. Everyone else should be wearing a belt.
Our schedule was quite crazy this week due to all the older students testing and the extra music rehearsals but the students were troopers and we made it through. :0) Our question ln language arts was, how can things in nature be used to make new things? They learned all about natural resources and how we use them. Ask your child to tell you some natural resources. Our story genres were informational text and a tale. Ask your child to tell you about the story called Spider Woman and the Navajo. What did the Spider Woman teach the Navajo girl and what did she promise the Spider Woman? I’d love to know if they remember. The vocabulary words were: natural resources, create, purpose, designs, knowledge, weave and goods. We worked on long vowel “o” and reviewed long vowels Aa and Ii. Our words were: where and look. This was week three of unit nine to they will be taking the test next week and beginning our last unit.
I have sent home a packet of long vowel words for the students to practice reading. Please have them practice. You can even add that to the reading log. :0)
The students began chapter 11 in math. It is all about measuring. In Kindergarten we work on length, height and weight. This is a very short chapter so they will complete it next week and take the test on Friday. Chapter 12 in on classifying and sorting data.
We did a very small amount of science and social studies this week due to afternoon music rehearsals. We are enjoying watching our caterpillars get really big. They are starting to make their chrysalis today. It’s awesome that the students are getting to watch this process. When we come in on Monday we will be able to put those into the butterfly house and wait for them to emerge as beautiful pained lady butterflies. Social studies consisted of making our Mother’s day invitations. I hope all our great moms have gotten theirs. Don’t forget it is on Friday May 11th from 7:45-8:45. You don’t have to stay the whole time if you have to get to work. Just come for a little breakfast and a special surprise. J Please NO siblings. Thanks for understanding.
Have a wonderful, fun weekend and get ready to see a great Winnie the Pooh show Monday night.

Dear parents,
Happy Spring break!!!! The students and I are so excited to be getting a little time off. :0) This will help us be smart, smart, smart for the last 8 weeks of school. It’s so hard to believe that we coming to the final stretch of Kindergarten. There are still many new standards for the students to learn so we will be working hard when we get back. Get lots of rest next week.
Our question of the week in language arts was, what is in the sky? This was a great topic since we discussed it science many moons ago in science class. The students remembered quite a lot. Our story genres were informational text and fantasy. Ask your child to tell you about our story called, Bringing Down the Moon. It was such a sweet story about a Mole who wanted to get the moon. The vocabulary words were: recognize, distance, challenge, space, imagination and surface. They didn’t have any new words or letters. It was a review week. That means we finished up unit 8 and will be taking the test when they get back from spring break.
The students got to have a fun egg hunt today. The eggs were hidden in the reading garden. Each egg was filled with words. They then had to go back to class and read their words to a partner and hand them back in for a treat. It was so much fun and great sight word, color word and number word reading practice.
We began chapter 9 in math this week. This chapter covers two dimensional shapes and their attributes. The students also did some fun Easter bunny math for review. They had to solve addition and subtraction facts to make a bunny and did some jelly bean graphing today. They even got to take their jelly beans home with them.
The students finished their study of Matter in science. It was a fun unit and they did very well on the assessment. :0) We didn’t get to make Oobleck due to some classroom behavior issues so I’m hoping we can try again when we get back from vacation. We will also begin nutrition when we return. Social studies was filled with some great bunny stories and crafts.
Don’t forget spring picture day is Monday April 2nd.
I did not send home reading log for vacation.
Have a wonderful, fun, fantastic Spring break!!! My family and I will be camping in northern Florida. :0)

Dear parents,
Good morning and happy Friday. I hope the students have a fun day off today. We had so much fun celebrating ST. Patrick’s Day yesterday. I hope their little pots of gold made it home safely. I sent home two St. Patrick’s day papers that we just didn’t have time to complete during the week. The students can do them for fun. They don’t need to return them.
Our question this week in language arts was, what do you know about our country? All of our stories were informational texts. We read about the National Mall in Washington D.C, famous places out west and even about the Florida everglades. I think reading about Yellowstone National park was their favorite. The vocabulary words were: country, travel, connect, landscape, and purpose. The letters were: Zz and Yy and our new words were: what and this. The students also wrote about what they would do if they found a pot of gold. Some of their answers were so funny. We also began phoneme substitution where we change the ending sound to make a new word. For example, we would change cat into cap by changing just the ending sound. This is proving to be a little tricky for some. It seems easier to change the beginning sound than the ending sound but we will keep working on it. This is something you can do at home too. Just think of some easy words and then pick a new ending sound and have them say the new word. This is a great car activity.
The students finished chapter 8 in math. They took the test and did very well on it. They were very proud of themselves. :0) They did a fun St. Patrick’s day review packet on Thursday. We will begin chapter 9 on Monday. This chapter covers two dimensional shapes, one of our favorites. Please continue to work on addition and subtraction facts with sums to five at home.
In science, we learned that Matter can change. The students go to practice this by playing with playdough. That was lots of fun and they made some awesome sculptures with it. We will be finally making oobleck next week. Yeah!!! It is so messy but oh so much fun.
Social studies was filled with some fun St. Patrick’s day stories and crafts and of course finding gold all over our room yesterday. There was even green glitter left by the sneaky leprechaun.
Don’t forget Spring break begins on March 26th.
Have a wonderful long weekend!!!

Dear parents,
Good evening. I hope everyone had a wonderful week. It went by so quickly. We have been in school for 126 days and I feel like the time is really flying now. Pretty soon you will have First graders. L The third quarter ends next week so I will be assessing the students on their personal information for the report cards. They are asked to know their full name, address, phone number and birthdate. Please review these at home.
Our question in language arts was, how can you get from here to there? Our story genres were fiction, informational text, and a Tale. Ask your child to tell you about the story The King of the Winds. The vocabulary words were: vehicle, transportation, journey, fierce, wide, transport and excursion. The letters of the week were Jj and Qq and our words were here and me. The students are working hard on writing. They are doing a great job sound spelling words out, making sure they have a capital, space between their words and proper punctuation. They also the unit 7 test and did quite well. :0)
The students are working on finishing up chapter 8 in math class. They have been working hard on numbers 20 and beyond. They are counting to 100 by 1’s and 10’s. They have to know what comes before and after a chosen number. They will take the test next week.
We are having fun studying Matter in science. It’s only a few days a week since we are now doing math stations two afternoons a week. In social studies we are learning about transportation. We decided to do this to go along with our language arts unit.
The students continue to work on lowercase letters in handwriting. They are working on the different types of letters. Some are small, some have tails and some are tall.
We will celebrate St. Patrick’s Day on Thursday with some educational, tasty fun and maybe a surprise, sneaky visit from a Leprechaun who likes to share his gold. Shhhh, don’t tell anyone.
Don’t forget school is closed next Friday March 16th.
Have a wonderful weekend!!!

Dear parents,
Happy President’s Day to everyone. I hope this newsletter finds everyone enjoying their long weekend. 0) The students and I had so much fun at Jungle Gardens on Friday. It was such a great way to end our week. A BIG “THANK YOU” goes out to our chaperones!!! You are awesome and I appreciate you taking the time off work to come with us. When we returned to school, the students wrote and illustrated some really great sentences about their favorite part of the trip. There are also some fun photos on our webpage for you to see.
Our essential question in language arts was, how are some animals alike and how are they different? This was a fun review since we have just finished studying animals in science. Our story genres were fiction, informational text and poems. The new sight words were: for and have and our letter was the vowel “Uu”. Our married letters were: “er” The vocabulary words were: behavior, appearance, detail, wander, exercise, and plenty. The students were very good about using these words in their conversations this week. I always love to hear that.
The students are still working on chapter 7 in math. We have been taking our time with this chapter. The students worked on numbers 16-18, recognizing them as ten ones and 6 more, 7 more, or 8 more ones. We will finish the chapter and take the test on Friday. They also got to do some fun Valentine math on Wed.
The students finished up the animal unit in science and took the unit test. They did very well. They will be moving on to Matter next. In social studies, we did some fun Valentines crafts and in handwriting, they started lowercase letters. We are working on magic c letters (c, o, g and q) right now.
Our Valentine party was so much fun. We had so many leftovers, we were able to have strawberry shortcakes on Friday afternoon when we returned from our field trip. Pictures of the party are on our webpage too. :0)
Winnie The Pooh pictures will be taken on Wed. I am hoping Mrs. Julie will send the costumes home Tuesday to the students can come in Wed morning all ready for pictures. Our time is 8:30.
I did not send a reading log home on Friday. I completely forgot to make copies because of our trip.
This is the final week for the Pasta for Pennies fundraiser. We are in about 4th place right now to win the Olive Garden lunch. Please send in lots and lots of pennies if you can. We would love to win.
Have a great rest of your Monday. See everyone tomorrow. :0)

Dear parents,
Happy Friday and HAPPY OLYMPICS!!! I’m so excited that the Olympics has begun and I have some fun activities planned so the students can learn a little bit about it.
DON’T FORGET TOMORROW EVENING IS THE SAA TALENT/VARIETY SHOW IN THE READING GARDEN FROM 5-7. I HOPE TO SEE EVERYONE THERE. :0) It’s going to be so much fun.
Our question in language arts was, how can you stay safe in bad weather? The vocab words were: prepare, safe, enough, hazard, notice and celebration. Our story genres were: fiction, informational text and a myth. Ask your child to tell you about The Rainbow Crow story. There were no new letters or words this week. It was a review unit. The students participated in the whole school write on Wed. They all wrote such wonderful sentences about “empathy”. Their illustrations for their sentences were awesome too. Mrs. Blankenship was very impressed.
Today the students worked with a partner making posters about bad weather and good weather. There was awesome teamwork going on. They enjoyed showing their posters to their classmates when they finished.
The students are half way through chapter 7 in math. This week our emphasis was on numbers 13-15 and how to represent them. We also took a day to do a spiral review of previous chapters.
The students had a lot of fun show off their animal projects in science this week. I was very impressed with how well they could remember and read their reports. I could tell how hard some of them worked on it. Great job!! They will finish up the animal unit with the small assessment next week.
We have begun our Valentine’s unit with some fun stories and a cute heart puppy dog craft this week in social studies. We will continue this next week too.
Don’t forget our Valentine party is Wednesday Feb. 14th. Each student needs to bring in a Valentine box and Valentine’s for their classmates. Please just have them sign their name and leave the “to” empty. It takes way too long for each student to read 18 names while passing them out. Thanks so much.
Have a great, fun, relaxing weekend and I hope to see you tomorrow night at the talent show.
Here is a little sneak peak of how cute the students will look at graduation. :0) Enjoy

Dear parents,
I had such a busy weekend so by the time I sat down to watch the Super bowl and write my newsletter, I noticed that my computer was dead and I had no charger. I had left that part at school. Oh boy!! So, happy Monday everyone. Don’t forget TOMORROW is class picture day. Kindergarten will also be taking a graduation class picture. It would be very helpful if the girls could wear their hair down so the graduation caps will fit. Pony tails make it hard for the caps to stay on. Thanks so much.
The SAA Variety show is this Saturday in the reading garden from 5-7pm. Many of the students and staff will be showing off their awesome talents. Come on out and see some great dancing, singing, acting, joke telling etc… We will be selling hot dogs, chips, drinks and baked goods. I can’t wait to see you there. :0) We even have a few Kindergarteners in the show.
Our question in language arts was, what happens in different kinds of weather? The vocab words were: predict, temperature, storm, drought and clever. Our sight words were: she and was and our new letter was “Kk”. The students worked on blends and digraphs ( er, ow, ch, ph, ing, ir, or etc…) The story genres were fantasy, informational text and a folktale. The students also took their mid-year benchmark assessment test. Many of them did an awesome job!!
The students are working on numbers 11-19 in math class. We are working on these numbers as ten ones and some more ones. Example: 14 is ten ones and 4 more ones. This is proving quite challenging for some but we are not giving up. Please work on this concept at home too. Thanks. We will be working on this chapter through next week.
Our topic in science is animals still. The animal projects that came in are so fabulous. The students have had a lot of fun showing and reading them to their classmates.
During social studies the students worked on their 100th day crafts and some groundhog crafts. We had so much fun celebrating our 100th day of school. Each activity the students did centered around the number 100. Thanks so much for all the snacks that came in for our day. We really appreciated it. I took a lot of photos that I will upload onto our webpage. :0)
Have a wonderful week

Dear parents,
Good evening everyone. We had such a fun week celebrating literacy. I took some fun pictures but unfortunately I couldn’t seem to get them uploaded today. It just wouldn’t work. I will try again this weekend. The students had a lot of fun during the week. The whole school read out on the playground was quite hysterical. Everyone was supposed to be silent reading and of course 5 and 6yr. olds can’t seem to do that yet so we were quite loud. And with the wind blowing like crazy, it was a very long 25 min. Fun but long. :0) The reading competition was awesome on Friday. It takes a lot of courage to get up in front of 40 or more people and read a story. We had 3 students from Kindergarten take part and I was so proud of them all. My favorite part was having such wonderful mommies come and read to us. THANK YOU SO MUCH!!! We will have to do that again.
Our question in language arts was, how are the seasons different? The vocab words were: weather, seasons, spot, active, migrate, climate, and hibernate. Our story genres were fiction, informational text and poetry. It was nice to have 3 different genres this week. Our letters were: Bb and Ll and our sight words were: little and is. We worked some more on blends and are beginning to work on diagraphs such as er, wh, dr, ph, etc...
The students finished chapter 6 in math and took the test. They are now beginning chapter 7. The essential question for this chapter is: how can you show, count and write numbers 11-19? The tricky part of this chapter is that the students have to think of these numbers as 10 ones and some more ones. For example, number 11 is thought of as ten ones and 1 more one. 18 is thought of as ten ones and 8 more ones. This tends to be confusing for some so please work on this at home. Also please continue to work on addition and subtraction facts with sums to five. The students will be taking the mid-year benchmark test this coming week. This will tell us how much the students have mastered from chapters 1-6.
With literacy week, we took a small break from science but will continue to study animals this week. Don’t forget everyone’s animal projects are due Friday. Please don’t send them in early as we just don’t have room for them yet. Thanks. Don’t forget to take a look at the rubric to see what needs to be on the project.
Social studies time has been our moms coming in to read with us. That was so much fun. This week in social studies we will be doing some fun 100th day activities and groundhog activities.
Don’t forget Wednesday is our 100th day of school. If you signed up to send in any snacks, please make sure to send them in by Tuesday. The cupcakes can be sent in Wed. DON’T FORGET ALL STUDENTS NEED TO BRING IN 100 SMALL ITEMS SO WE CAN USE THEM FOR MATH. :0)
Tuesday Feb 6th is class and graduation pictures. Kindergarten gets to have a special graduation at the end of the year so we will be wearing caps and gowns. They look so cute in them.
Have a great rest of your Sunday and hopefully I will be able to upload the pictures of literacy week tomorrow with Mr. Brett’s help :0) I will send the link to our webpage when they get up.

Dear parents,
Happy chilly Friday. I’m glad it’s a little warmer today. To keep warm yesterday, the students and I made homemade hot chocolate in a crock pot. We enjoyed warm cocoa with marshmallows in the afternoon. It was a yummy treat.
Our question in Language Arts was, what kinds of living things grow on trees? The genre of our stories was informational text. The stories were all about fruits and veggies that grow on a farm. The vocab words were: delicious, fresh, raise, special, beneath, and teamwork. Our letters were “Ff and “Rr” and our sight words were: with and he. We also continued to practice our blends. I will introduce the students to diagraphs next week. We finished up unit 5 and will take the test next week. The students will also be taking a mid-year benchmark test in reading soon since they are halfway through the curriculum.
The students finished up chapter six in math this week. They will be taking the test next Tuesday. I have sent home a small packet of practice problems to complete this weekend to review for the test. Please make sure to return it Tuesday. Chapter 7 will be all about representing, counting, and writing numbers 11-19. They are represented as 10 ones and some more to make the number. For example, 11 is ten ones and 1 more, 12 is ten ones and 2 more.
We are continuing animals in science. This week we talked about animals that have fur, scales, and feathers and how animals can be different in many ways.
The students are reviewing Nursery Rhymes in social studies. We have had fun reading and watching them again.
Next week is Literacy Week. It is a very busy fun filled week with all sorts of reading activities.
Monday the students will have book buddies in the afternoon with some 6th and 7th graders.
Tuesday we will have a whole school read. The whole school will meet on the playground to read in the morning for 25 minutes.
Wednesday is character dress up day. Students may dress like a favorite book character. They MUST bring the book in with them please. They should also have a change of clothes in case they want to change.
Thursday is Stop, Drop, and Read. Anytime during the day, a teacher may ask the students to stop, drop and read for a few minutes. They will have a carry a book with them everywhere.
Thursday night is Literacy Night. It is a fun evening where the students can come and pick out some books to take home. We will also have a presenter from the library for the parents and great snacks. We are in need of some books. If you have any you would like to donate, please send them in. The students are trying to earn Literacy tickets during the day so they can trade them in for books. The books are free.
Friday is the reading competition. We have two students in our class signed up to read so far.
We also have some wonderful mommies coming in to read to us during the day. This is my favorite of the week. :0)
The 100th day of school is on Wednesday January 31st. It will be a fun day with lots of “100” activities.
Have a wonderful, weekend!!!

Dear Parents,
Happy New Year and welcome back to school. :0) We are so happy to be back together and working really hard. Our question in language arts was, how do living things change as they grow? The stories all centered around how trees change as they grow. We had two informational texts and a fairy tale. Ask your child to tell you about the Grand old tree story. The vocabulary words were: develop, amazing, enormous, content, imagine, forest and canopy. The sight words were: are and there and our letter of the week was “Ee”. I introduced the students to blends. They are 2 and 3 letters that you put together to make one sound. For example: sl, cl, sw, pr etc… I sent home a paper Thursday to let you know all about this. Our married letters were “oa” which makes the long o sound as in oak or coat.
We began chapter 6 in math. This is all about subtraction. I sent home a subtraction/addition fact sheet Thursday as well. Please make flashcards to help your child master these.
The students began a unit on Animals in science. This unit will last for a few weeks and have a project attached to it. The project information went home today. It is not due until Feb 2nd (ground hog day :0))
Social studies was all about Martin Luther King Jr. this week. We had fun learning about him and why he is so important. Don’t forget school is closed on Monday for MLK day.
We are getting ready to celebrate our 100th day of school. This will land on January 31st. We will have a fun day filled with lots of “100” centered activities. Be on the lookout for a signup genius email. We will need some items to help with our celebration.
There is a skate night next Thursday January 18th at Stardust.
Literacy week begins Monday January 22. Be on the lookout for information about this fun week.
I sent home a reading log this week.
Have a fantastic, fun long weekend!!!

Dear parents,
Happy winter break!!! The students are so excited to be starting break and for Santa to come. It was quite hard to contain their excitement this week, but we made it. Yeah!! Our party today was sooo much fun. Ask your child to tell you all about the different stations and crafts they did in the primary classes this morning. The cookie decorating was lots of fun and very yummy too. We sang the 12 days of Christmas with the entire school on the playground (I think Kindergarten sounded the best) and rested during a Christmas movie. What better way to end our day? The students do not have their planners written in. We were too busy having fun. They do have lots of items in their backpacks so please make sure they get cleaned out during vacation. I also sent home their pencil bags to get replenished for the second semester.
Our academics this week centered around reviewing previous standards we have worked on. We will begin unit 5 week 2 in Language Arts and chapter 6 in math when we return.
Have a wonderful holiday break and I will see everyone on January 8, 2018.
PS: I took some fun pictures of our fun day and uploaded them onto our webpage. Enjoy :0)

Dear Parents,
Happy Sunday and happy cooler weather. It finally feels a little bit like Christmas. This weather will be so nice at recess and PE this week. Yeah!! Perfect for our show tomorrow too. Don’t forget to have your child wear winter clothes and hat, mittens and scarves for our field trip to the nursing home tomorrow. Mrs. Julie has lots of extras if you don’t have any. You are going to love the show. It’s really cute. Don’t forget the students need to be a Glenridge by 5:40. They go on stage at 6pm.
Our essential question in Language Arts was, what do people do to help make their community better? Our story genres were informational text and an Aesop Fable. Ask your child to tell you about the community garden story and how we have our own school community garden. The vocab words were: community, improve, harvest, quarrel, and confused. We did not have any new letter or sight word this week. Rather, we reviewed all our previous letters and words we have had so far. Our married letters were “sh”. We can find this pair at the beginning, middle or ending of a word. We have finished unit 4 so the students will take the assessment this week. The students also took two mornings to work on the second diagnostic i-ready test. We focused on the reading portion of the test this week. I believe everyone has completed that so we can move on the math portion this coming week. We go to the computer lab first thing in the morning to take the test. This week we will go up Wednesday and Thursday and possibly Friday morning. They have also completed their goal of passing 100 i-ready lessons so we will be having a special “goal” party tomorrow. “SHHH”, we will be having a candy cane party and short holiday video in the afternoon. Smarties flavor candy canes are the best. They are quite yummy. Our next goal will be to pass 150 lessons.
The students continue with chapter 5 and addition. Last week they worked on completing addition sentences using pairs of numbers to make the sums 3-9. We will do number 10 Tuesday and then get ready for the test on Friday. I am not quite sure we will start a new chapter before our holiday break. They will most likely do some review the week before vacation so we can start fresh in January. Please work on addition math facts with sums to 5 at home. When your child has mastered that, they can work on facts to 10.
We began a unit on Motion in science. This week we talked about positions of items using the vocab words, in front of behind, beside, in between, above, below, right, left etc… We also talked about different ways things can move. For example, straight, round and round, back and forth, and zig, zag. This week we will conclude our unit with ways to make things move and magnets.
Our social studies unit was on Needs and Wants. This is always fun to hear what the students think the “need”. Ask them to tell you about what a need is and what a want is. They made journals about this. They’re cute. I am using them as a writing assessment so they will not come home for a few days.
The students have finished the corner starting letter words in handwriting and will move on to the center starting capital letters.
Don’t forget the Timeline projects are due tomorrow. I can’t wait to see them. I’m sure they will be fabulous.
Holiday shopping at school will begin on Tuesday. I hope everyone has had a chance to read the flier that went home last week. I have already had some envelopes returned. Mr. P’s math students and I are going to help them shop during the day. Don’t forget to write on the envelope who your child should buy presents for. This is different than the school store. If anyone has a question, don’t hesitate to email me. :0)
Don’t forget our holiday school party is on Thursday December 21st. We can wear our jammies to school. I can’t wait. I promise to get my sign up genius email out to everyone this week for the ingredients we will need to decorate our cookies for snack.
See everyone tomorrow!!!

Dear parents,
Good evening. Please make sure to check your child’s folder today. They do not have a reading log this week but they do have a homework assignment to complete for Monday. I’m mixing things up a bit. :0)
This week the essential question in language arts was, what do people use to do their jobs? This was a fun topic to talk about. The students were quite knowledgeable about what tools people use to do their jobs. The genre of our stories were informational text and a tale. Ask your child to tell you about Little Juan and the cooking pot. That was a silly story. Our vocab words were: equipment, uniform, utensils, expect and remain. Please try to use these at home as much as possible. The students took unit 3’s assessment this week and they are now working on unit 4. Our letter was the vowel ‘o’ and our sight word was ‘you’. Our married letters were ‘ck’.
The students finished chapter 4 in math and took the assessment this week. We have started chapter 5 which is one of my favorite to teach: Addition. We will be working on addition for a few weeks. We will also be reviewing different pairs that make numbers 3-10.
We are studying planets in science. This week we learned a lot about a space station through an awesome book Tayton brought in for us to read and astronauts.
The students have heard some great Thanksgiving stories this week. We have been talking a lot about what it means to be thankful. They have made some fun Thanksgiving crafts too.
Farmer Brown will definitely not be finding turkeys in our room for Thanksgiving this year. All the turkeys that came in are disguised beautifully. Everyone did a fantastic job.
The students completed their goal of passing 75 i-ready lessons (as a class) this week so they had an ice cream and sprinkle party. They are now working on completing the next goal of passing 100 i-ready lessons together. They are really enjoying using the chrome books in our classroom to work on i-ready. Don’t forget they can do i-ready at home too.
Picture re-take day is next Tuesday.
Don’t forget skate night next Tuesday night at Stardust.
There are only two days of school next week. School is closed Wed-Sun. The students and I are looking forward to this little break. :0)
Have a wonderful, fun, relaxing weekend!!!!

Dear parents,
Happy Sunday. I hope everyone is having a great Weekend so far.
The students and I had a fun week. They looked so cute in their Halloween costumes and the party was great. I have uploaded some photos of the party and also the cute pumpkin characters onto our webpage.
Our question in language arts was, what are the different sounds we hear? The genre of our stories were informational text, a fable and a fiction. Ask your child to tell you about our story called The Turtle and the Flute. The vocab words were: volume, listen, chat, familiar and exclaimed. Please review these at home weekly and use them often if you can. It really helps them retain the meanings. I do my best to use our vocab words when teaching and it is so exciting when a student will recognize a word from weeks ago. They all get excited too. The letter of the week was “Nn”. We are working hard on phonemic awareness: recognizing beginning, middle and ending sounds in a cvc word and being able to spell cvc words on the response boards. It is very important for them the be able to pick out place in a word where they hear a particular sound. We are also working on blending sounds into words. In grammar, we are working on reviewing nouns and beginning to learn about verbs “action words”. We are also working on sentences. Making sure there is a capital letter to start a sentence, spaces in between the words and a proper punctuation mark at the end.
The students began chapter 4 in math. This chapter is all about comparing numbers to 10 and proper number order. We are using the vocabulary words, greater than, less then, and the same as again. I am putting an emphasis on 1 or 2 greater than and 1 or 2 less than a particular number since that is our standard. The students are using number lines to help with this. It is a great tool to use for this standard. They can move their clip or finger on the line 1 or 2 times up or down to see the answer. They’re easy to make too. :0)
We are working on the day and night sky is science class. The students drew some great pictures of things they might find in a day/night sky. This week we will begin studying space and gravity.
Social studies time was filled with lots of fun Halloween crafts and finishing up reading our pumpkin character books. I think we have a few more to read and then they will be sent home.
I sent home the student’s Thanksgiving project on Friday. If anyone has any questions, don’t hesitate to ask. The students were so excited talking about all the ways they want to disguise their turkeys after reading the funny story. Feel free to help but let them do MOST of the work please.
FST Theater will be visiting us this week to talk to the students about how to write a play. It should be lots of fun.
Have a great day. :0)

Dear Parents,
Good evening. I hope everyone is having a wonderful weekend so far. Our question in language arts this week was, what rules do we follow in different places. We had lots of talks about all the different places we have to follow rules. Going on our field trip brought the rules we have on a bus and the rules we have at a theater. The students did a great job following the different rules and they really enjoyed seeing Robin Hood. It was a great show. Our vocab words were: cooperate, rules, responsible, prank, and guard. The new letter was “I” and the new sight words were: to, if, it and in. Our married letters were words with “ai” as in rain and train. The students took the unit 2 assessment this week as well. I will send those home next week.
The students finished chapter 3 in math. They took the chapter 3 test. They will begin chapter 4 on Monday. This chapter involves comparing numbers 1-10 using the vocab words greater than, less than and the same as. Please work on this at home too.
We had lots of fun investigating and learning all about pumpkins in science class. We learned all about the pumpkin life cycle, read some great books and examined a real pumpkin. The students were able to cut it open to explore the insides. Many of them had lots of fun pulling out the pulp and seeds. I even roasted the seeds and brought them back in for the students to taste the next day. Pumpkin seeds are sooo yummy. I even showed them a pumpkin row boat race on the internet. They were so amazed that 1. Pumpkins float and 2. that they can grow so big that an adult can fit inside it. It was so much fun to watch. I have uploaded some photos of our fun onto our webpage.
In social studies we read some fun Halloween stories and did some great Halloween activities.
The pumpkin book characters are very cute. Everyone did a great job. A Thanksgiving project will be coming home this Friday. :0)
Our Halloween party is this Tuesday. Students may come in costume to school and bring a change of clothes. We will be changing out of our costumes before lunch. Please NO MASKS OR WEAPONS. We will be parading around the campus first thing in the morning so if you would like to come and watch from the basketball court, you may. I believe Mrs. Julie is going to have them sing some Halloween songs too. The parade usually starts at 8:15.
If you signed up to bring something in for our party, please send it in on Monday. Thanks so much.
Have a great rest of your weekend. :0)

Dear parents,
Wow this week really flew by. I’m sure it feels that way since we weren’t together on Monday. Maybe it was because we were so busy and they say time flies when you’re having fun.
Our question in language arts was, what kinds of bugs do we know about? This was a great topic. The students really knew a lot about bugs. We will have fun expanding on this topic during science this year too. The genres of our stories were informational text and a cute fiction story about a little boy who LOVES bugs. It was a review week so there was no new letter or sight words. We did talk about the married letters “oi” and how it makes the same sound as “oy”. The students came up with some great words with the “oi”: soil, boil, oil and coin. This was the last week in unit two so the students will be taking the test next week.
The students are finishing up chapter 3. This week our emphasis was the numbers 8 and 9. How they can represent them and what pairs make those numbers. They will take chapter 3 test next week also. Every so often we will finish a reading unit and math chapter at the same time. Chapter 4 comes next. The students will be comparing numbers to 10.
We finished up studying energy in science and the students did very well on the assessment. We moved onto bats. The students filled out their first Venn diagram comparing bats and birds after we read Stellaluna.
The students finished their community helper topic in social studies. They learned about so many people who help us in our community. See how many they can name.
On Friday Mr. Brett came into our class to teach us all about coding. The students have a mouse that they have to program to get the cheese. The cards they have to follow start out pretty easy and gradually get harder and harder. It was a crazy, fun time. Ask your child to tell you about the mouse and how he gets to the cheese.
The Lego wall is almost complete. We were able to create with it for a little while this week and the students had so much fun. :0)
Don’t forget our field trip is Tuesday October 24th to FST. Everyone should have a SAA polo shirt or t-shirt if possible.
95% of all reading logs returned today did not have the students name on it. It is very hard for them to figure out which one is theirs after they are handed in and they will not get credit for it if it does not have a name. If they don’t get the credit, they don’t have Friday extra play at the end of the day so PLEASE, PLEASE have them put their name on it. They are working hard in class on completing their responsibilities and writing their names on their papers is definitely a major one.
I have sent out a signup genius email about our Halloween party so please look for it and help us out if you can.
Have a great weekend!!!

Dear parents,
The students and I had quite a busy week. It started out with our first field trip to see some Sesame Street characters and do some arts and crafts. It was a fun trip although I really wanted to see Big Bird and he wasn’t there. L A few of the students were a little nervous riding a bus for the first time. By the end of the year, they will be pros at it.
Our question in language arts was, how do tools help us to explore? We had lots of fun with this topic. The vocabulary words were: tools, discover, fetch, rumble, defeated, and investigate. Our story genres were informational texts and a Tale from Japan called Timmimoto. As your child about the giant in the story that comes out at nighttime and what Timmimoto does to save himself. Our letter was letter ‘p’. We worked on words that begin the letter and words that end with the letter ‘p’. Our new sight words were ‘a’, ‘all’, and ‘at’. We didn’t do stations this week due to our field trip on Mon, unit 1 testing on Tues and Wed, and our health tests on Thurs all happening during station time. Today the students did their first partner projects in language arts. They each had to work with a partner and come up with a person and a tool that makes that person’s job much easier. They had to write a sentence about the person and tool that they use and then draw their picture to go with the sentence. We had some awesome teamwork going on. It was a little tricky in the beginning trying to compromise and decide what person they were going to do but they handled it nicely and the posters were great. They even got to stand up and show their classmates the posters. We can’t wait to do this again.
The students began chapter 3 in math this week. We are working on numbers 6-9. Our essential question for this chapter is how can you write, count and show numbers 6-9. They will also be working on pairs that make the numbers. For example, they had to come up with all the pairs that make the number 6. They 6 and 0, 5 and 1, 4 and 2, and 3 and 3. Next week we will work on numbers 7 and 8.
We had lots of fun in science class. We had to solve the problem: how can we cook without a stove, grill or campfire? They had to do some background experiments to help solve the problems. The first experiment was seeing what color absorbs sunlight? We learned that black absorbs sunlight much more than white. Ask your child to tell you about the black and white papers over water bottles with balloons at the top experiment. We also learned about how light reflects. On Wednesday we made a solar oven and used the sun’s heat to make a s’more. It would have been really great had there not been so much wind. It kept blowing our marshmallow off the graham cracker and sand kept blowing on it. We did get to see the chocolate melt. That was exciting. We learned that sometimes things don’t go exactly as we want them too since we couldn’t eat our s’more but thankfully I saved some marshmallows and chocolate to hand out. We look forward to our next Magic School bus experiment.
The students worked on capital letters P, B and R this week.
We began talking about community helpers in social studies. This was great since we were talking about this in language arts too. I hope you got to play the community helper memory game your child made this week. There are a few students that need to finish cutting out all the pieces so if it didn’t make it home, it will soon.
A big thank you to everyone who came to back to school night on Tues. If you didn’t make it and have any questions, do not hesitate to email me.
A new reading log was sent home today along with the student’s second project. It is the pumpkin book report project. Please read through everything carefully and if there are any questions, do not hesitate to get in touch with me. This is a really fun project. It is not due until Oct 24th. I also uploaded photos of last year’s pumpkins onto our web page for inspiration. I also added pictures of our awesome teamwork this morning. I think I’m starting to drive the student’s crazy taking so many photos of them.
Have a happy weekend :0

Dear parents,
Good evening everyone and happy long weekend!!!
This week our question in LA was, what can you do? This was our last week in our smart start unit so we will begin unit 1 next week. We began learning how to do stations. This went pretty well. I will walk around next week too to make sure they are working independently and quietly before I start guided reading with small groups. The students went up to the computer a few mornings this week to finish up the i-ready diagnostic. I am glad to say 99% of the class is finished with both reading and math. They will be working on the Kindergarten Flickers computer test next.
The students have finished chapter one in math and will take their first test next Wed. They are very ready for it and will do a great job. Chapter 2 is all about comparing numbers to five. We are also reviewing counting to 100 by 1’s, 5’s and 10’s (one of our standards), shapes, number words and patterns.
We started the five senses unit in science this week and will continue this for a few weeks. There are so many fun activities to do with this unit. The students got to use their 4 senses to examine a navel orange. They decided that they didn’t use their sense of hearing. Their favorite sense to use was the sense of taste. It was quite yummy.
The students used our social studies time to work on a special project for open house. It will be a very cute surprise.
Don’t forget back to school night is this Wednesday September 1st at 6pm. It is a time to come and see what we do all day. It sure is a lot. Students do not need to attend. If you need to bring your child, they will get to stay outside. There will be supervision. We just do not have enough space in our room for parents and students.
I have sent home our first project of the year. It is an “all about me” banner. Please read the directions carefully and return it by Sept 11th. We will be hanging them in our room. :0)
Friday is school spirit day. If your child has an SAA t-shirt or polo shirt, please have them wear it to school. If they don’t have one yet, please make sure they do by October. They will need to wear it on all our fieldtrips. You can purchase a shirt at Children’s World on Bee Ridge (close to McIntosh) Thanks
Friday is also ice pop day. :0)
Mrs. Julie and the students have started practicing the Fall Follies show. She asks that each student bring in a small stuffed animal to use in the show. It will need to stay here until the show so they can practice with it.
I have taken some more pictures this week. I won’t take them every week but we are having fun photographing our first few weeks. This week’s pictures are of reading buddies. They have lots of fun on Thursdays reading with the 3rd graders.
Have a wonderful, fun, adventurous long weekend!!!

Dear parents,
Happy Friday!! Kindergarten had a great second week of school. We started out Monday learning about the eclipse and enjoying our yummy astronaut ice cream.
Our question in language arts was, who is in your family? Our stories and discussions centered around this topic. The students made some very cute family portraits today. We continue to review all sorts of concepts in whole group time. Next week the students will begin learning about language arts stations. This will take place after whole group time each morning. I have 10 stations set up around the room where students will work in pairs while I am having a small group of students at my table for reading. Some of the stations are spelling, writing, art, i-pads, building (words and sentences), word detective, drama, games etc… The students will rotate twice during this period. My goal is to have them doing this independently in a few weeks. :0) They will have folder that they carry with them and a station menu to cross off where they have been. They can only go to the stations once.
The students have started the I-ready diagnostic. Many of them have finished the reading portion and are on math. We will finish this next week. I will send home the results within a few weeks.
The students finished the beginning of the year test and have started chapter 1 in their math books. It is a pretty easy chapter for us so we are trying to skip what we have already mastered. We are talking about numbers 0-5 and all the different ways to represent them. They can draw objects, use the number, write the number word or even make tally marks. We will continue next week with all the different ways we can make the numbers. For example, how many different ways can you make the number 5 (4 and 1, 3 and 2, 5 and 0).
We have started our handwriting curriculum this week. The students are working on writing capital letters on our small chalkboards and in their workbooks.
The students have been learning all about science tools this week. I hope you got to see their paper pocket of tools that they made in class. Those are all the tools we will be using this year. The students got to explore and have fun with many of them today. I took some cute pictures of this and will put them on our webpage. They had a great time.
In social studies we continue to work on school rules, friendship and kindness. We also started reading buddies this week. Every Thursday we have reading buddies with 3rd grade for ½ hr. The students had a blast.
Please remember to sign your child’s planner daily and to check their folder.
Don’t forget back to school night is Wednesday September6th at 6pm. Come on out and learn about what we do all day. You will be amazed.
Kindergarten gardens Mondays with Mrs. Howard to please make sure to wear closed toe shoes and clothes that can get a little dirty. They have lots of fun and are so excited about growing fruits and veggies.
Have a wonderful weekend with your awesome child!!!

Dear parents,
Wow, what a great first week of Kindergarten the students and I had. We were so busy getting to know each other and learning all about school rules and procedures. We even had our first practice fire drill. The students did such a great job. I was so proud. :0)
Our question in LA was, how are we special? Our whole group activities and stories centered around this topic. We talked about what makes each of us special. We also reviewed letters, sounds, rhymes, and color words. It always takes a few weeks of review before we begin our first unit. We even found a new ABC song to sing and dance to.
In math, we also did lots of review. The students started the beginning of the year test today. We will be finishing it on Mon or Tues. It has lots of questions to see what they already know and what they haven’t quite mastered yet. We made it through the first 10 questions. Just taking a test is new to most students this age. We are definitely going to take our time.
Our topic in science was, what is Science? We talked a lot about what we will be studying and learning about in science and learned some new vocabulary like observation, researching, wondering, experiments etc… Next week we will be learning about and using science tools.
Our social studies topic was, Welcome to school!! We read some great stories, talked a lot about rules and manners, and made some fun crafts.
The i-ready testing window opens next week so all the students will be taking their first diagnostic in reading and math. This is done online in the computer lab and they will do this three times during the year.
I’m sure our favorite part of the week was when the ice cream truck came. We all got to have ice cream for having such a fantastic start to the new year and for having 100% open house attendance.
Please make sure to clean out your child’s folder daily and to sign their planner. Also, please make sure your child’s name is on their lunch box and their water bottle.
Kindergarten WILL NOT BE GOING OUTSIDE ON MONDAY TO VIEW THE ECLIPSE. Mrs. Blankenship and I have decided that it’s just not safe for us. I don’t want any of my students to hurt their eyes and the glasses we have are just too big for us. If you would like to come and take your child outside to see it, please feel free to come. Have a wonderful weekend!!
Thanks for your cooperation.
